I got a response from Oberon who makes the sweet Ducati mirror extenders, I also sent a reply:
Hi Jeff,
I beleive the volume will be far too low to make this work commercially, we would need to expect sales of 150 pairs minimum in the first 6 months to be able to make them for approximately £100 per pair. For us this would also need to be yearly sales of 300 pairs to eventually get back the R&D costs, how many 'interested' parties do you have so far?
I should also add we have not yet studied a bike for ourselves to evaluate the design criteria, so these are 'ball park' figures.
Kind regards,
Steve
Oberon Performance Ltd
Steve,
Thanks for your response, as far as interested parties, I probably know about 10, but they are just the owners on the Pelican Parts Technical Forum. The reality is that there were 2500 HP2 Sports made worldwide, but they all suffer from the mirror problem. The mirrors allow almost no visibility of anything other than your elbows. These bikes are also predominately used on the street, even though the mirrors were designed for easy removal for track purposes. The majority of these bikes are in Germany, and if you do a quick Google search you will see that many owners are trying things such as mounting up S1000RR mirrors, even though it requires drilling through the carbon fiber body work. I actually do think you could recover your R&D costs and sell your 150 unit quota, but it will require some targeted marketing activity on your part, there are some BMW only motorcycle publications that might get a lot of interest.
Regards,
Jeff
