Try cleaning the MAF sensor. My 99 did similar things. It would sputter and actually quit running, sometimes. You could immediately restart it and it would be OK. At Wayne's suggestion, I unplugged the MAF sensor for a short while, and the symptoms went away. In my case, a previous owner had installed a knock-off sensor that was worthless.
