gremmie, not a rookie! There is a distinction.
A longer fin, in my opinion, would suit you better for now because it will help stabilize your board when you make turns. A stable board = a stable rider.
I use Sex Wax myself but there are other brands out there that could also be as good that I haven't tried. So for now my vote is for Sex Wax. As mph911 said....there are specific formulations for different temps of water...softer for cold water and harder for warm water. Just stop at a surf shop if necessary and they will know which one is best for where you are surfing. As a snowboarder you may have used Sex Wax already. Here's a link with more info:
