IMHO, absolutely NOTHING on the Internet is private. It's a very safe assumption that anything you do/type/send/receive/buy/etc. is public information. I seriously doubt that clearing your browser history will help anything.
Also, the "news" is in the business of making money (No, the are not in the business of providing news.). So, the more "shock value" a story has, the more visitors they have (or viewers, etc.), and therefore the more advertisers they get, therefore the more money they make. Don't believe all the hype.
