3.6l Oil relief valve cap torque

Rebuilding a 1992 964 3.6l and installing the Oil pressure relief valve cap I torqued it down to it's spec (44 ft-lb), but the aluminum washer got completely deformed (see picture below). Is this correct? The original old washers were not deformed at all? 44 ft-lb seems like a lot for this bolt, but I looked up the torque spec in several locations and they all verify. It doesn't feel right....
