i don't know what your talking about when it comes to old school ?? if your talking about single stage top coats it's not really old school at all many cars of today are still using single stage colors on there non metallic finishes . one is no more ez than the other just deferent .
if your painting in an open air area ( not in a spray booth ) i would go with a B/C color . the reason for this is you can stop between coats to sand out any thing that may land in the base color . you can't do that to a single stage color . spraying a s/s finish it may take 4 or 5 wet color coats to get to proper hiding and to give you some thing to color sand and buff . were a B/C finish you only have 2 or 3 wet clear coats to worry about getting crap in .
if i were you i would block sand the hell out of that car all the brake thru's on the hood and sides will make that car look like it's waving at you as you drive by . i would get a long board and using long X strokes with some 180 grit paper or 100 grit start blocking the old finish on the car . using the old paint as you would blocking a primer coat . then when it's all block out at straight at it can be lay down one at the most 2 coats of an E-primer over the hole car . you then can do your body owrk over the top of the E-primer then with one more coat of an E type primer over the bare metal spots you then can use a filler type primer .
