They do seem to last, but I've seen a few crap out on cars. They seem to go the same way they do on streetlights - where they just go into flicker mode a few at a time. Just a few days ago I was behind a Mercedes where 3/4 of one brake light would stay on and the other 1/4 just flickered a lot.
