Mirror extensions
Hey Shredder, that is actually where I started with extensions for the stockers but really didnt think that the look was worth the effort.
The stockers are unusual where the metal base unit is a tapered unit from the base to where the mirror attaches to the base. From here it continues to taper up the mirror stalk. We need the mirrors to be up about an inch and out at least two inches. I first drew a piece that went between the base and fairing that accomplished that but really looked like aftermarket cheese with 3 distinctive sections. Then I came up with a piece that replaced the metal lower section that had the extension requirements. Looked a little better because there were only two sections, but this proved that the real place that needed the extension was the mirror housing.
The skinny section of the mirror "stalk" is really the correct place to grow the mirror out and have it look properly. So a complete new mirror housing and use the original base was the best looking and functional option.
So I tried to remove the mirror glass from a stocker to see if this was possible and also the pivot mechanisim. If I was able to get it out then possible purchasers could do the same. No Luck, broke the mirror pivot and ruined the mirror. This option was also going to cost a lot more because 2 molds had to be made and this was very expensive especially considering the the quantity that would be made.
I abandoned all of this for my current solution as it is more appropriate for the masses and looks good, reasonable costs and no mods to the bike.
We made the first S1000RR / HP2 pivot out of plastic today before doing one out of aluminum to see how the design worked. A few more slight changes and I should have it sorted out. I also get 20% off on stockers so can pass that on for those interested, and will proably sell some of the brackets alone and modified new mirrors for those less handy with doing the mod themselves.
