I love the kids of today. One wanted to help me on a small job so I told him to be here at 7am and we'll put some tools in the truck. I told him after that I'd stop and buy some breakfast.
I left at 7:10 alone. Didn't give him a cell no., where I'd eat and no job address.
I wanted to work alone anyway.
I bet he thinks I'm a dick. 30 years ago if I had a helper they were parked in front at 6:50. 40 years ago I was just starting out and knew damn well I needed to be on the job ready to work at 6:50.
I didn't walk to school 7 miles uphill both ways in the snow, but I did walk to school or to the bus.
I don't get today's parents. I think it's peer pressure. My stepson wasn't raised by a "helicopter" me or his mom. But he drives his kids 3 blocks to school.
My mom never saw me play baseball once and never made it to the kart track once. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, though. I think the moment the kids left the Scotch came out.
