Initial 928 Ownership -
Hey Edgars, To help answer your initial ownership questions:
1) Check over this and other 928 web sites for an indepth check list of pre-purchase concerns. Your personal list will probably grow considerably in length as you approach scruffy. A well documented maintenance record will help indicate the condition of the potential big ticket items – such as the timing belt, water pump, crankshaft thrust bearing, etc...
2) The typical 928 price will start at a “non running - tow it off the property for free” range to $20,000 for a late model in pristine/well maintained condition. Many 928’s in the U.S. are often available for $1,000 - $3,000 in very reasonable condition. The GT seriese are priced off the charts.
3) Fuel consumption is directly proportional to the application of your right foot. Many owners experience a low of 9-10 Mpg in stop and go traffic to 20-22 Mpg on the highway.
4) The engine noise is exceptionally low on the 928. It will primarily be the exhaust/muffler combination that will determine how your neighbors view your arrival.
You may need to be a bit cautious in buying a 928 without considering a few other areas of ownership. Such as :
1) Do you have an experienced 928 Porsche service facility in the area of Riga with maintenance manuals and parts available. It would also normally be important to use their expertise in completing your pre-inspection prior to buying the car.
2) Buying a car off Ebay might be problematic if after shipping it to Latvia there is a dispute. Especially with no oportunity of a pre-inspection.....
3)If you plan to service the car yourself, what is your technical experience in owning a relatively expensive car to maintain ?
From a personal side, I thoroughly enjoy the cars I own and have no regrets in buying them.
Good Luck, Michael
