I do live in the country. We have skunks living under the bedding shed at the barn. They don't bother the horses, the dogs ignore them (although our blind dog has stumbled over one, with stinking results).
They do hunt for food in the daytime.
Now coyotes, that's another story. Not welcome around here at all. I know they are here, but they receive a firm reminder of their status whenever one shows its nose, so they tend to stay out of sight.
