Meine neue 911!

Hello everybody,
Just bought my first Porsche, an '88 Carrera coupe. I had never driven a 911 before (yes, I bought it 'sight unseen' from the west coast); it's quite a machine. The motor is incredibly smooth and powerful, everything is tight and precise.

I have a couple of questions -- forgive me if they sound dumb:

1. I had difficulty filling her up -- apart from premium being $5 here in Chicago, the nozzle automatically shuts off immediately; I had to keep pumping and clicking it to fill up. Anybody else have this issue?

2. As I said, the motor runs incredibly smoothly. But when it was cold it hesitated a bit, and at one point I heard some popping, sounding like a backfire. Once it was warmed up, it was fine. Any cause for concern?

3. One disappointment was that I couldn't figure out how to heel-and-toe with this car. With my old BMW I can put my big toe on the brake and blip the throttle with the other side of my foot. In the 911 the brake and accelerator pedals are way too far apart (see photo). Can the pedals be adjusted? Or is there another technique?

4. Finally, anyone have any tips about repairing the stitching on the stock Carrera steering wheel? I'd like to return to the stock wheel from the small diameter Momo currently on the car.

Since it seems to be a tradition here, I've tried to attach a photo. Not the best shot because I was too lazy to move the car out of the garage. But you get the idea. The first order of business is to delete the whale tail ...

TIA,
Hugh
