I'm not intending to pee on anybody's method but.....I just really wonder about guitar setups having a bazillion buttons and knobs and patch cords, etc. 'Course, I'm a bass player so whaddo I know, eh? But.....that many connections, that many bits of circuitry, can't be good for fidelity and, well, I just wonder about it. In the olden days, if a guy played through a Marshall, there was no need for a fuzzbox. So, maybe he had a wah-wah pedal and if he wanted to be fancy, he'd have a phase shifter.
The guitarist in my band has a setup nearly as complex-looking as the one pictured. To my ear, his guitar sounds crappy on every setting except "clean." His distortion is so obnoxious-sounding it just makes you wanna punch somebody. And when it comes time (like in The Bomber, or in Listen To The Music) for good-sounding effects like reverb or phase shifting, he seems to be unable to achieve those. WTF? For all that equipment, he's really got just two sounds: clean and ugly/distortion.
