When my dad owned my 911 he had brought it to a mechanic down in L.A. that was close to his office at the time. He Hungarian, ex fighter pilot. He had a Bonanza as well and would often fly with a group of guys on Sundays. They liked to fly low and into the canyons. For some reason, instead of doing the normal routine of overflying the canyon(s), to make sure you could get out and it did not quickly "box" you in, they did not and headed on their way, about 45 minutes before we took off - unbeknownst to us. Our suspicions were confirmed a day or two later. He and another plane rounded a corner in a canyon and slammed into the side of a mountain. Two other planes had hung back for some reason and were able to pull up and out.
sucks. we just had a guy go down out in the mojave a couple of weeks ago. last summer, we lost a guy in the grand canyon area...it was eerie looking at the giant tv monitor in my area, and seeing the guys callsign listed on an Alert Notice...for weeks. Took months to find his wreckage.
