From my experience............ The short answer is the material, is that simple, Have you ever noticed the older Ford Explorers Outside Trim?(just one example)
ALL of them turn grey over time regardless of what you do to them, Why? The material. Same goes for the headlights on specific models, never mind the UV rays do an excellent job killing them, but they can't survive due to the material, same goes for some leather seats.
That's not to say that with a strict maintenance plan, we can prolong the surface life. Certain products will work much better than others but the challenge here is finding which ones are.
