Yes, the ducts are functional. I didn't chime in earlier because this is a major modification for very little return.
The ram air effect is real and it can be fealt in the seat-of-the-pants dyno, especially on a cool day when the engine is hot.
Hot oil + cool inlet air = HP
Obviously the increase in power isn't much, but enough to make the engine feel more "alive".
When the 3.3 turbo is installed the ductwork will go to the intercooler instead of the air intake.
