If there was ever an industrial, commercial town, Bakersfield is it. Other than the railroad, oil and all the farming for miles and miles, there is no reason for a town there.
I guess you could say that about a lot of places. At least where I live, it all started with the beach. People came down to Long Beach to cool off.
You can't cool off naturally in Bakersfield until January when you freeze to death.
