Eric, Volvo safety is a "fallacy"?? Are you saying that they are not safe vehicles, or simply that other makes equal them? If the former, it's a real head-scratcher...
I would put Mercedes Benz alone ahead of them for full line crash-worthiness. There are of course many other individual models of other makes that crash well and industry-wide passive safety is way up.
My BIL drives an XC-90 in Mpls., I've frankly never even walked 10 feet to the curb to look at it. Someone was just telling me the other day that auto journalists really rave about those things as one of the best in class, I had no idea. I'll have to drive his sometime.
