He isn't dismissed by those that have a clue. One reason that he often doesn't get mentioned though is that he really didn't play "bass". Instead, he made music, and for some songs he happened to have a bass in his hands. His approach is often very much like a sung line, and he tends to carry melody and counterpoint rather than a more traditional bass line or groove.
It is part of what made their music different, and why they will endure long beyond other "rock" bands. The wrote songs and conveyed ideas rather than played instruments together.
