Few ways to do this.
If you have the DVD's ripped already in any format (Divx, Avi etc), you can actually play them on your iPad with CinexPlayer. This does not require an .mp4 video file

If you want to use the native movie player app on the iPad then Handbrake (
HandBrake) is a good converter to .mp4.
