Late DME in early car

I know it's possible, and it's been done many times, but does anyone have problems with it? I ask because my 84 n/a does not like the late DME and AFM at all. The car will run 100% with the late stuff, except sometimes it starts freaking out and won't rev past 2200 rpms with out some crazy stumbling/backfiring. Sure makes it interesting to get on a highway

I've tried two DMEs, one stock and one resoldered, and two AFMs both tested good as per clarks garage. So the problem must be a compatibility issue somewhere. I've read people reccomend switching to the late ICV with the swap but I doubt that would make the car run great one second and terrible the next. Switching back to the early stuff cures it every time

Any Ideas?
