I am constantly amazed at the bickering that engine conversions cause. Plain and simple, if you don't like it, don't do it! Yes, some like it and some don't. But if everyone was the same what fun would there be in living? This reminds me of how the air cooled car owners think about the water cooled cars (in general--everyone is not the same) and these cars (water cooled) were built by the same people. I happen to be one who likes the V8 conversions, the water cooled cars and the air cooled cars. In fact, I also like VW's. I don't think that I have ever owned a car of any type that I haven't modified somehow. I just don't like to own a car that is like anyone elses and I like ths challange of engineering the modification. Just because something is modified doesn't automatically mean it is bad. I got started modifing cars because I couldn't afford the cars I really liked. I had a 76 911s that I converted to a turbo look. It cost far less than a turbo and to me it was just as fun, I couldn't have had one otherwise. The same goes for my 944. I am converting it to look like a 924 Carrera GTS and am considering, guess what? A Chevy V8 conversion. This also gets some fired up discussion on the 924/944 BBS.
My point is, everyone has their own ideas of what is good for them. No one is suggesting that all 911's or 944's should be converted to Chevy V8's, we are just expressing ouf feelings on what we enjoy. For some it's preserving their car to exact origionality, for some it's modifing with only with factory like parts, and others like to just go faster than anyone including the rich ones with the PowerHaus mega$ turbo motors that cost more than a house! There's nothing like the raw power of big cubic inch V8's! Nothing. Although, I have to also say that there's nothing like ths sound of a highly modified 911 flat 6 either. That's my 2 cents... or should I say dollar and a half!

Do what you enjoy!
