There is a reason behind the use of plastic. I remember I changed out shifter knobs and door handles on a couple of my cars and learned my lesson. Imagine having a nice metal shift knob and door handles bake in your car on a hot day. Get in and you can't even grab the shifter so you have to use a towel on it.
