I just had that happen last week. On the (newer) Porsche. (the newer Porsches definitely use Torx) It bunged up the fastener. ~$20 for a new fastener, $5 for a new drive.

This was in taking loose a plastic intake manifold with a T40. I was stunned.

JohnT has some good tips. Well, I don't agree with his third tip, but the other three are good.
