Since posting, I've had good luck with (mostly) purchased CD's but also with several burned ones. iTunes suddenly remembered how to get information.
But then (this is interesting, really, I'll be brief)......it told me it could not load a whole Bonnie Raitt album because there was no room left on the (4G) ipod. I said OK instead of cancel. It loaded about half the songs. Then, I deleted a couple of other, lesser albums/playlists. I deleted the Raitt playlist. Then I copied the full Raitt playlist back to the ipod, and it only loaded the same songs....half of the album I did more deleting, and still it would only load the same six Raitt songs, rather than transfer the whole playlist. So.......I added all the albums back to the ipod that I had deleted. No problem. So.....then I added several more albums. No problem. Fk.!
Gonna try again this morning.
