a lot of the stuff on it is a myth
but I think I saw this mentioned in an Appalachian documentary film on PBS and one family was on the side of the big coal co.s that the inhabitants hated so much
the myth I heard is that they were fighting over a particular dirt eating area -- a little known fact is that in many parts of the South people ate dirt to overcome a specific nutritional hunger for some mineral that was lacking in most of the food - these areas were often handed down within a family, inherited rights to eat dirt, yep...
