I also make a habit of only adding "real" friends on fb. OK, true...some may be friends from 20 yrs ago but I still know enough about them to know they are not psychopaths. It always amazes me when people have 1000+ friends...maybe I'm just grumpy and no one likes me, but I know maybe 20 people in my life really well - and no desire to expand that. I have less than 100 friends on FB and it has been a great tool to keep in touch.
That said, as an investment, I wouldn't touch it. Yes, they are deeply entrenched but that still does not mean they couldn't fade away in a couple of years when something better comes along. And for me, and I suspect lots of others, if they started to charge even a nominal fee, I'd drop in a heartbeat. I don't see how the monetize the huge "subscriber" base and generate the kind of growth they need long time to justify the valuation. Not gonna happen, in my admittedly un-researched opinion.
