Yeah, I know what you mean. Being a window installer and having to break glass a few times a year, I've only been using this method for 20 years.
Nothing wakes up a neighborhood like a whole window glass hitting the ground. That's the kind of attention I like to avoid.
I've popped so many tempered glass doors that I've forgotten how many. What happens is the header above a large unit deflects downward and captures the fixed side.
