It is too easy to jump to conclusions and the old guy was so wrong to say something. On the other hand if somebody looks at u the "wrong way", I would ignore it. If they misunderstand the situation, then that is their problem. However it is easy to have preconceived ideas of how lives should be led and that is wrong. Minding your own business is a lot smarter.
Of course this all gets amplified in a bar under the influence of alcohol and can result in a fight where stupid can lead to physical pain.
