There probably isn't a huge choice of those cars in Australia. Probably Australian cars had the full 125 bhp so peformance even with the 3 speed auto won't be too bad but even with a 5 speed manual they weren't exactly fast. The rubber damper for the auto trans. is expensive compared to a clutch, and labour intensive to replace, but not more so than for a clutch.
A friend in UK bought an 83,000 mile 924Auto in good running order last year for under £1000 incidentally. A couple of parts in the cold start circuitry were replaced with bits from eBay to ensure good starting.
