With the O2 sensor plugged in or not your car will still run pretty good.

With a bad/failing relay or poor connection between the Lambda box and the frequency valve, the frequency valve does not operate properly. It is not the O2 sensor that may be the issue, it is the functionality of the frequency valve that you need to zero in on. Replace the relay and look at that connection on the back wall. I think it is a 10 or 12 pin connector.

The real test is to pull the relay while the car is running well and see if the same poor running symptoms return.

Also, there is an O2 fuse in the front trunk that powers the whole system. I can't remember the location on the bank of fuses but it should say on the plastic cover. That will create the same symptoms if a poor connection.
