As an update to this thread, thought some of you might be interested in our new replacment reflector, made from a composite known as 'Texalium'. Kevlar proved simply too difficult to work with for volume production, namely from the standpoint of creating clean edges and consistent resin impregnation. So we turned to a product created by the Hexcel Composite corporation, known as 'Texalium'. Essentially, it’s a fiberglass-basic fabric that has a proprietary finish and a thin coating of aluminum on the surface. The aluminum coating is 99.99% pure and approximately 200 angstroms in thickness (One angstrom being a billionth of a meter). This coating produces a highly reflective surface, allowing it to mimic the prismatic red characteristics of the factory reflector. We back it with a layer of 12k Carbon Fiber for rigidity.
The results are quite nice:
We will now be offering this Texalium composite reflector in addition to our carbon fiber version.
