I'm not a geotech but I am in the bidness of building BIG things and we drill lots of pilings, down to bedrock, to build anything heavy.......or if we just want it to last. Lots of 'glacial fill" here. Seriously. If you want to building something semi-permanent, or heavy, then you hafta drill lots of deep holes and fill them with rebar and concrete.

And that's the extent of my geotechnik understanding. Nothing is built on the "ground."
