If you're thinking .38 in a revolver, a .357 magnum will shoot both .38specials and the magnum rounds. A .357 is not a prime bear round, however it is an outstanding round and with proper bullets can do the job. Even though the design of a black bear requires a bullet capable of deeper penetration than a human, most black bears are 200-350lbs, and with proper ammo a .357 can be effective. Had a good sized bear in my driveway Sunday, but the dogs were plenty of deterrent.
