Wow! Here we go with the overblown hype again.
Yes, the IMS is a potential time bomb issue. However, the number of IMS failures versus the total number of engines out there is guessed by many in-the-know to be somewhere around 5%. 5% is much too high, in my opinion, but it also means that somewhere around 95% of the engines have no issues.
My 137,000 mile 996 (100,000 by me in the last six years) has had no issues. In fact, when I had the IMS replaced with the LN Engineering unit that is considered damn near bomb proof at 110,000 miles, my old one was perfect. Perfect.
My wife's 65,000 mile 2007 Cayman has been perfect.
Problem is, we always hear about the failures. We almost never hear about the majority of engines with no problems.
