ok - simple
go visit the working museum part (you can see them go after the rock with paint brushes)
then ask at Park/Monument HQ about the paved roads
They should have a map of the park on their web site, and it likely shows road types with warnings
I have not been there in years either, but it is a really nice place to visit and on my visits did not have too horrible a toruista load.
I was in the canyon and had forgotten the history, and thinking what a fabulous place to dam and destroy all the scenic beauty by drowning it. Then I realized it was the site of a historic fight over damming rivers...
So get down in the canyon if possible.
