I think he wants to power the router by battery.
Red + and black - are typical for DC, although white is sometimes used for positive.
If you have a volt meter, you can cut the cord from the power supply to the router, leaving a stub at the power supply. Strip the wires back, attack voltmeter and plug into wall to verify the polarity.
