You should also make sure that the 12V coming out of the power supply is DC and not AC if you are planning to use a 12V battery type source. Although unlikely, the power supply could simply be dropping the voltage down, not rectifying it.

As for polarity, as Red Beard and Radioactive mentioned, use a meter to determine the polarity out of the power supply. You might be able to do this before cutting the wires if there is an adapter plug that is used instead of wiring going directly to the router. Determine the polarity with the PS powered. Note which plug connection is plus and minus. After cutting the wires, Ohm out the wire to the plug and you should be able to tell which is plus vs. minus.
