We watched the Matrix (first one) today in philosophy class as a prelude to Descartes. (Well, all but the ending.) It is a good movie but the special effects that have now become cliches seem hokey at first until you remember that they were new back then.
It was funny to see all the huge CRT monitors and the big cell phones. And internet through phone lines.
I also kept having lines trigger memories of song titles. "White Rabbit" (the whole pill thing) and "Welcome to the Machine" were obvious but then there was "Us and Them" and "Search and Destroy" (Iggy Pop) in the dialogue. There was also the "Breathe, just breathe, Neo" and Run Like Hell (when you see an agent).
I think the writers had a similar taste in music to me.
It had been a while since I watched this movie. It really is a pretty good story.
