clunk and binding in the rear

Ok so coming back home from the movies the other night, I was getting onto the onramp and as I was accelerating in 3rd gear, there was a loud clunking noise. I pulled over right away and checked underneath....nothing looked abnormal and there was nothing on the road. I get back in and try it again and I get a clunking along with a binding, as if something is holding it back. Anyway, I tow it home and put it up on jack stands today. I checked my clutch and that was ok, checked the CV's and those seem fine, there is no play in them. I removed the rear tires and checked to see if maybe the brakes screwed up and was causing the bind but those too were ok. I replaced the tires and then spun one while in neutral....no noise and no binding. I put the car in 5th gear and spun the wheel....this time it spun but the clunking was there and only when I spun it slow did it stop clunking allowing the other tire to rotate. Same result when I tried it in 3rd gear. What is your ideas on what it is....probably gearbox?
