We live in the Sierra foothills and theres plenty of them around. Towns keep expanding into their habitat plus they are seriously protected and now have no fear of humans...just another food source.. A few years back a woman jogging in a Sacramento rural area was killed by one but not before he toyed with her for over two hours. I'm friends with a couple of Sac Sheriff deputies who gave me this info from investigators....not released to the public of course...
We have seen big cats in our back 'yard' many times because it is connected to some large wooded areas. Los of folks are missing pets.
Yes they are beautiful animals but will attack and kill if they want to. When people feel threatened many just shoot, shovel, and shut up. If caught after killing one here you WILL be in huge trouble.
