it sounds like an ignition miss - are you sure the spark plug wires are in the right place? If the wires are old, they may be arc'ing to each other or to ground. Take a look at it idling in the dark to look for the arc's or (not for the timid) run your hands all over the wires as it's idling to feel the shocks.
Did you gap the plugs too far? This can cause mis-fires as well, as the spark finds an easier place to jump.
