ya know i got turned onto the dead when i was very young. wake of the flood i think. i have been playing drums since i was like in 3rd grade or so, school band into high school, then became a jock and the skins were sidelined. but always was a music freek and listened at least once before a yeah or nay.
picked the sticks up later in life, and havent looked back and it is just like getting back on a bicycle.
i have been called a "dead head" as i have the grateful dead satellite station on about 98% of the time. but what i always yearn for is "OLD AND IN THE WAY!"
i'm a lil bit country and lil bit rock and roll. i like country/bluegrass/ rock. and man when jerry was playing with NRPS,(new riders purple sage) , i was in 7th heaven.
got to see him play with NRPS a few times, saw a lot of dead concerts over the years, saw jerry by himself, saw him with the jerry garcia band. saw bob weir when he had his bobby and the midnights band.
what i can say about the dead and jerry is that i dont think there are many band members of any band that ever played the spectrum of instruments and music so well. from banjo/mandolin/pedal steel and on and on.
and the best part of each and every concert despite what you "thought" they wer gonna do..................pre expectations...............it was ALWAYS BETTER!
when i found out jerry was diving off of kona, and i knew i was going over, one of my day dreams was to meet him on a dive boat, away from the crowds and shoot the breeze with him. seemed like a really good guy, let alone the story telling.
i was really sorry to hear about him passing, it was also a really heavy day when i found out about it.
one of my college amigos was a bonifide "dead head" roadie. he was from tennesee and followed them for quite some time all over the u.s. and canada. always had the latest tapes and t-shirts/stickers etc.. one of my roomies in college was from san francisco and grew up with the dead and was also a tie dyed in the wool "dead head". so btwn the (2) of them i was never far from hearing new music or knowing when they were coming to play anywhere close to us.
and yes probably my faves are "europe 72" and "mars hotel".
dont think i will ever see a band that runs the entire spectrum of music like the dead in my lifetime.
a "grateful dead" satellite radio station................."GO FIGURE!" ya know jerry's laughing about that let alone "jerry garcia" dress ties(which i own a few of).
i'd give my left nut for a drum class with mickey hart and bill kreutzman.
