I think I recently heard that somebody put a Flowmaster 50-series on a Bursch-style extractor/pipe and like it. There are several flavors of Flowmasters with different sound levels.

Be careful about the overall size, shape and inlet position also, if you're attempting to fab up something that will fit in the stock position. You will basically need something about the size of the little can on the Bursch's.

When I bought my car, it had essentially a nice custom stainless version of the Bursch style J-tubes -- except bolted up to a eurorace header -- and used a Thrush muffler. The exit was in the stock position and it was pretty quiet (too quiet actually, the carbs were way louder than the exhaust)
