Porsche Crest 911 (G/964/993) Convertible FIX

Porsche 911 (G+964+993) Cabriolet Top FIX

I came along the following problem – the roof on my 91 964 C4 worked like a charm – then one day (last week) it stopped working – tried to twist my Bows and did that ratteling noise......

I tried to figure out what’s wrong but came to no conclusion.

So I disassembled the TwinMotor, the two Transmission cables and the two round shaped gears.

I tested the motor – fine, syncron Check
I checked the gears – drivers Side like new – passenger Side some resistance.
I checked the cables – spinning freely – no wear.....

Took me two minutes to figure out whats wrong:

The outer plastic cover of the Transmission cables did not shrink over the years – they extended.

By doing so the inner drive (cable) was almost covered all the way by the plastic tube.

So the square ends just were not able anymore to stay/ connect to either the motor or the gears anymore – thus no connection.

So I decided to cut he outer plastic tube (after pulling the drivewire out) to shorten it a bit.

I got some transparent plastic 3/8 Hose/ Tube at Lowes – and connected both outer Tubes back together by squeezing them into the clear Hose.

Guess what – perfect fix!

I then opened the gears and cleaned everything out – regreased the gears and put hem back together.....

Yesterday everything went back into the 964 and voila – the Power Top is back.

Hope that fix helps.

Keep the good things coming!
