I guess I have to qualify the word "job." He didn't mean that as employment, although he might have in some way. He was talking about a contract or agreement.

My dad was in the advertising business. As I have pointed out before here, he was the Don Draper (Mad Men) of his day. In his context, it would mean "chase them until they catch you" or look hard to get. He wouldn't have allowed his hunger to show.

People always want to haggle for a better deal. His reply was based on the you-will-get-what-you-pay-for ethos. Oh, I'm sure he could make a deal or three. I think he tweaked his Rotary Club 4-Way Test:

Of the things we think, say or do
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Or based on the truth

Will it build goodwill and sales/brand loyalty?
(4th line) Well, if it wasn't, he'd lose the account one way or the other.

But, I can't put those words in his mouth and he's not here to say.
