I have seen race cars with that entire area swiss-cheesed with a hole saw for weight reduction, so I doubt 2 small holes will do anything. Those cars did have cages though.
The whole body is galvinized on a 77 so corrosion shouldn't be a problem, except for possibly the edges of the hole, but that is easy to protect.
