I used to talk to a guy named Julian at Abels who was an BH Interior Decorator. Anyway one day while previewing a Sunday sale he showed me two pieces of art done by two different artists. Both were consigned by the same person, both had a brief Bio of the artist on the back and BOTH USED THE SAME PALLET OF COLOURS...HMMMM...now what does this tell ya...Julian said, "FAKE." It seems that consignor always was putting a couple fo pieces into the Sunday auction.
I just happened to be sitting next to the winning bidder during that auction. Right before that piece of art came up for sale I told the other person sitting next to me that the piece was a "FAKE." Yet the winning bidder went ahead and paid $7000 for that piece of art. Amazing....
Generally on the lower end of the spectrum you don't have to worry too much about fakery.
