yes to both - the asus desktop worked fine with both cables, then developed what seemed to be an intermittent problem with the long, cheap cable

I switched it back to the short cable but it does not work - black screen & monitor says it is going to sleep

whenever I put the long, cheap cable on now it says "check video cable"
