I don't know about a 16x9, but I ran 245/50-16s Goodyears on my stock 16x7s for over a year with no issues. I had a rear tire blow out and when I went to a friend of mine that is a tire dealer, he had a pair of take offs he offered for free. Since a 7.0" wide wheel is the minimum spec wheel for a 245/50, I had them mounted up. My SC was still at the stock ride height at the time, so it didn't like awkward with the tall sidewall like it does on some of the lowered cars in this thread. Despite the narrow wheel and sidewall flex, I never had rubbing issues even when cornering at the limit. Handling improved a lot over the old 225s where the back end stayed a lot more in check under braking and in corners it would nicely pivot on the inside rear tire. Never really found a negative to it, but I would have preferred a wider wheel if I had a set. Sorry, I never took any pics of it with the medium rear tires.

There is nothing wrong with running a big tire as long as you have enough room to properly fit it. I have no problems with the 335/35-17 I run today on 17x13's, which are a little taller than 245/50-16's:

The fronts are 245/45s on 17x9.0" wheels, which are the same height and width as the rear setup discussed in this thread. When I was measuring for the backspacing for the new wheels, I used the 16x7's with 245/50s on the front to do the measurements.
